Common tourist act that carries a $435 fine

A popular tourist destination in Europe has decided to ban the use of suitcases in a bid to curb the noise of wheels dragging along stone-paved and cobbled streets.

The city of Dubrovnik in picturesque Croatia attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.

However, due to these large numbers of travellers, the city’s Mayor Mato Frankovic has introduced new measures to try to reduce noise, according to local reports.

In the city it is now illegal for people to roll their suitcases through the cobbled streets of the old quarter.

Heavy or not, tourists will have to pick up the suitcases by the handles and carry them, or risk being fined $A435 if they fail to comply.

From November, the local government will introduce a system to allow tourists to deposit bags outside the city.

Couriers will then take tourists’ luggage to their accommodations.

The measure comes as part of the “Respect the City” program, introduced by the Dubrovnik Tourist Office, according to Schengenvisainfo News.

The local government will also impose regulations on the amount of noise businesses can make during certain times.

Venues such as cafés, restaurants and bars will have to take measures to keep their outdoor terraces quiet, and will only be allowed a certain number of tables outside.

They also run the risk of fines in case of infractions, plus the risk of having their outdoor areas closed for seven to 30 days, or even permanently

Dubrovnik remains a popular tourist destination with The Dubrovnik Times reporting the city has recorded 289,000 arrivals since the beginning of the year.
