Colorado Is Auctioning Off Weed-Themed License Plates For Charity

The State of Colorado is giving weed enthusiasts an opportunity to wear their passion for hashin’ on their sleeve, er, automobile. The state was famously the first to legalize cannabis for adult recreational use in 2014, and has spent the last decade leaning into the revenue-generating business of weed. Since 2021 the state has held an annual weed-themed license plate auction to benefit the Colorado Disability Funding Committee on April 20. This year’s auction includes the plates “420,” “NUGGET,” “Reefer,” and “Grass.”

“The Colorado Disability Funding Committee has been an incredible support to the many nonprofits and local partners statewide working to improve life and increase opportunities for Coloradans with disabilities,” Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera said in a news release. “This auction continues to be a meaningful way to celebrate Colorado’s cannabis industry while making an impact in the lives of others.”

It is important to know before putting these plates on your car that frequent cannabis use could put you at increased risk of DUI arrest in Colorado.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, “The primary determinant is the driving behavior and observed level of impairment witnessed and documented by the law enforcement officer. Arrests are made on observed impairment. Any level of THC in your blood can put you at risk of a DUI.”

Advertising that you’re a fan of weed could put you in the crosshairs of overzealous police, whether you’re driving high or not. Caveat emptor, and all that jazz.

From now until 4:20 PM on April 27, Colorodoans can bid on the plates, though the bid only allows them access to the highly-desirable vanity plates. They’ll still be responsible for paying the standard registration fees, personalized plate production fees, and additional fees for designer backgrounds, if they so choose.
