Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean we have to jettison all of our open-toed shoes. Charlize Theron is making a strong case for adapting our summer footwear for fall, saving them from spending months buried deep in the back of the closet.
The actor was in New York on behalf of her charity, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project. Dressing for the low-50s temps, Theron wore a brownish-gray wool suit set from Bottega Veneta over a white mock neck long-sleeve top. While her skirt’s hem reached her calves, it had a large slit up the front, drawing the eye to her shoes.
On her feet Theron slid on a pair of open-toed gold mules from Bottega (appropriately called the Atomic mule, a fitting callback to her Cold War era spy thriller Atomic Blonde), which she wore over sheer, calf-high black socks. She accessorized with a pair of sharp, oversized black sunglasses; a bold, hot pink lip; and a black woven leather bag from—you guessed it—Bottega.
While the pre-fall 2023 suit was also styled with metallic gold shoes on the runway, swapping a boot for a summery sandal creates a dynamic juxtaposition with Theron’s wintery suit, and gives a lighthearted twist on an outfit that could’ve walked straight off the runway as is. And for those of us who cannot regularly wear head-to-toe Bottega Veneta, this outfit provides some transitional fashion inspiration. Want to wear your summer slides in the autumn chill? Don’t be afraid to wear them with socks.
