Chapel St nightclub in Melbourne goes up in flames with fire deemed suspicious

A popular Melbourne nightclub on Chapel St has gone up in flames with the blaze deemed as suspicious.

The fire broke out at Lux Nightclub in Prahran at 1.45am on Thursday in the bar on the second floor.

It took 50 firefighters and 15 fire trucks more than an hour to bring the blaze under control.

Fortunately, no one was injured however there is a community warning for smoke in the area.

Chapel St in Prahran between Toorak Rd and Malvern Rd remains closed to traffic and trams in both directions and congestion is expected in the area for the morning peak.

Tram passengers on Route 6, 72, 58, and 78 may need to consider using a combination of trains on the Sandringham, Frankston, or Glen Waverley lines and Route 246 buses.

Drivers can use Punt Rd to the west or WIlliams Rd to the east to get around the Chapel St closure.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact police.
