Cate Blanchett Successfully Adds a Little Sleaze to a Look

When images of Cate Blanchett entering the Good Morning America studios first emerged, I thought to myself, “Hmmm… What charming but sexually-troubled antiheroine might the actress be promoting this time? A power-hungry maestro leading an illicit double life, a troubled art teacher leading an illicit double life, or an ermine-clad housewife, who, in a stunning turn of events, is also leading an illicit double-life?”

Much of this is because Blanchett was photographed wearing large aviator glasses. The sort of thing synonymous with louche film directors in the 1970s and the sleazily-undone proponents of indie sleaze in the late Noughties. She wore those “perv glasses” with a velvet denim Brandon Maxwell pantsuit—a freaky fabric that begs to be touched–with a wood grain-effect belt and croc-embossed Christian Louboutins.

The actor was, of course, encouraging audiences to see Borderlands, a movie based on a video game of the same name, in which she plays an intergalactic superhuman leading a group of ragtag outlaws on a deadly mission to retrieve treasure from a mysterious vault full of alien loot. “I think there may have been a little Covid madness,” she said of accepting the role. “I was spending a lot of time in the garden, using the chainsaw a little too freely. My husband said, ‘This film could save your life.’” Thankfully she will not be engaging in method-dressing, because a little sleaze is perhaps better than a lot of nerd.
