Brisbane Broncos shoot down Reece Walsh $5.5 million contract story

Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters has scoffed at reports suggesting that young NRL superstar Reece Walsh had signed a $5.5 million contract extension.

Details of the deal appeared in News Corp mastheads on Tuesday evening with the headline ‘Walsh agrees to term for $5.5m contract’.

But appearing Nova 106.9’s Ash, Luttsy & Susie O’Neill, Walsh said it wasn’t true.

Show co-host Ash Bradnam said to Walters that “we’re all reading the story about Reece Walsh and the great news that he’s agreed to a new contract with the club”.

“So he’s going to be here for a while to come along with Ezra (Mam),” Bradnam said, referencing Mam’s recent five-year deal.

But Walters was quick to pour cold water on the report about his 21-year-old gun.

“Well, that actually has not happened yet, unfortunately,” Walters said.

“Someone’s pulled the (trigger) a bit early.

“There’s still negotiations happening with Reece so I’m not sure why (that has come out).”

O’Neill said: “Oh, really? He hasn’t signed it … oh, jeez, that’s bad, isn’t it?”

But Walters was confident Walsh’s signature was not far away.

“I believe he’ll end up staying long term, but I think there’s still a few things to work with between him and his manager and the Broncos.

“He certainly is (a perfect fit for the Broncos) and I’m sure that (the contract agreement) is not far away from happening but it hasn’t actually happened right now. So all those Broncos fans don’t be despondent, he’ll be right.

“But it just hasn’t quite happened just yet.”

Walsh also shut down the story.

“Don’t believe everything you read,” he said on Instagram.

“No deal has been signed.

“I’m doing me … I’ll let you know when something happens.”

Then he had a small dig at his coach.

“Someone give Kev my number … he’s lost it, I think.”

If Walsh does sign a $5.5 million extension, that would make him the highest paid player in Brisbane’s history.

Former pivot Anthony Milford still holds that title after signing a million-dollar-a-year contract back in 2017.

Walters also spoke about Walsh’s face fracture that he sustained during the clash with Penrith.

“It was difficult cut to stitch … it was a really bad one,” Walters said.

“But he’s in good spirits now. He’s a tough little bugger from Nerang.

“If he was allowed to, he would play this weekend, but he’s not allowed to, unfortunately.”
