Brighton v Tottenham LIVE: Latest score and goal updates as James Maddison doubles Spurs’ advantage

Brighton host Tottenham in the Premier League as each club looks to propel themselves up the table. The Seagulls came into the weekend sitting ninth in the league, just a point behind their opponents.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side are looking to bounce back from a 4-2 defeat to Chelsea last time out though the scoreline doesn’t reflect the performance from a fairly equal game. Brighton are aiming to secure their first win in the top-flight since August having recorded draws with Arsenal, Ipswich and Nottingham Forest before the Chelsea defeat.

Spurs, meanwhile, come into the match on the back of a brilliant display against Manchester United which resulted in a 3-0 victory for Ange Postecoglou’s men at Old Trafford. They have won their last five games across all competitions and can climb closer to the top four with a victory this afternoon.

Brighton 0-2 Tottenham, 40 minutes

It has just felt a little too easy for Tottenham to create opportunities in this first half, Brighton again too loose at the back after their struggles against Chelsea last weekend. Fabian Hurzeler looks frustrated on the touchline.

GOAL! Brighton 0-2 TOTTENHAM (James Maddison, 38 minutes)

But Tottenham have their second!

Bart Verbruggen won’t want to watch this one again. Timo Werner rolls the ball across the edge of the box to James Maddison, left vacant in just the space he’d like to be with Brighton dragged out of shape. His shot is nothing particularly bothersome, neither with the oomph or precision one would normally require to beat a goalkeeper from that distance.

But a skiddy surface perhaps plays in his favour, the ball skipping beneath Verbruggen’s extending left arm and into the bottom corner.

Brighton 0-1 Tottenham, 36 minutes

The momentum has swung since that Tottenham opener, Brighton’s fans (and players) lifting the volume. Jack Hinselwood’s forward foray allows the midfielder to latch on to Kaoru Mitoma’s latest inswinger from the left, but he doesn’t generate sufficient purchase on his header to hit the target.

Brighton 0-1 Tottenham, 33 minutes

Brighton’s best spell of the match continues, Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh putting Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie in trouble in turn. A corner looks dangerously placed, too, but a Brighton contestant is deemed to have fouled a visiting counterpart before he can line up his header.

Brighton 0-1 Tottenham, 31 minutes

A poor miss from Danny Welbeck! An anguished look to the heavens from the veteran striker, found deftly by a bendy outside-of-the-boot cross from Kaoru Mitoma but unable to divert it goalwards.

Brighton 0-1 Tottenham, 27 minutes

A clash between James Maddison and Joel Veltman sees neither emerge with credit. The Tottenham midfielder is first a little theatrical in his tumble under pressure from the Brighton defender, but he’s then thoroughly outdone by the Dutchman in the thespian stakes as Veltman falls to floor after a brush of arms. The referee gives both of them short shrift.

GOAL! Brighton 0-1 TOTTENHAM (Brennan Johnson, 24 minutes)

That one will count! He just can’t stop scoring!

Six games in a row with a goal for Brennan Johnson! Brighton give the ball away in midfield and Dominic Solanke can survey an inviting defensive shape, plenty of space through which to thread a pass. The weight is perfect for Johnson to scuttle on to, and there’s little doubt that the in-form Welshman is going to beat Bart Verbruggen.

OFFSIDE! Brighton 0-0 Tottenham, 22 minutes

Tottenham think they’ve opened the scoring but Pedro Porro is offside in the build-up! A double ricochet from Timo Werner’s header results in the ball creeping across the line via James Maddison’s body, but Porro had just gone too soon earlier in the movement.

Brighton 0-0 Tottenham, 20 minutes

A very useful foot from Lewis Dunk, using all of lank to nip in ahead of Dominic Solanke with only him between the Tottenham striker and Bart Vebruggen.

Brighton 0-0 Tottenham, 18 minutes

Timo Werner waltzes past Joel Veltman, but can’t pick out a colleague with his cut-back.
