Boy, 12, arrested after driving stolen vehicle more than 250 km

A 12-year-old boy was arrested after leading cops on a chase while driving his grandfather’s stolen car more than 257 kilometres across the Washington mountains.

The unidentified boy was arrested and taken into custody last Wednesday by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office after the Issaquah Police Department notified deputies that he had allegedly stolen his grandfather’s car, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office on Facebook, per people.com.

Cops were informed that the boy had a “connection to Moses Lake” and might head to the Grant County area.

“The Sheriff’s Motor Traffic Unit went looking for the car and found it around 10:20 a.m. parked at the curb of the 900 block of Lowry St. in the Larson community,” the sheriff’s office said.

The boy “then led deputies on a short pursuit that was safely ended near Randolph Rd. and State Route 17 when a deputy applied a PIT maneuver to the stolen car,” the statement added.

The pre-teen drove the vehicle a total of 259 kilometres before police stopped him, The Seattle Times reported.

Representatives from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office didn’t immediately respond to people.com’s request for comment.

The sheriff’s office said there were no injuries and that the chase and damage to the vehicle was “minimal.”

Once in police custody, the boy was transferred to the Chelan County Juvenile Justice Center and charged with “suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle and felony eluding,” police said.
