Body of Raymond Peterson, 85, found two days after he went missing

The body of a man missing for two days has been found only 350m from where he was last seen in the New South Wales Hunter Region.

Raymond Peterson, 85, was last seen at Yarrum Ave in Beresfield on Monday afternoon.

Extensive efforts were undertaken to locate the elderly man, who suffered from dementia, with police divers and NSW SES joining the search.

On Wednesday, police confirmed a body believed to be Peterson was found near Anderson Dr, only 350 metres away, at midday.

“A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner,” NSW Police said.

Local MP Sonia Hornery had been posting regular updates regarding the search for Peterson.

She gave her condolences to his family following the news of his discovery.

“My thoughts are with Raymond’s family and loved ones, this must be a very difficult time,” she said.

Julie Peterson, Raymond’s daughter, thanked the community and emergency services for their efforts in helping locate her father.

“The community response has been overwhelming. We are astounded at the kindness of so very many people who gave so much to help us,” she wrote.

“We are filled with gratitude for the Port Stephens and Hunter Police and the State Emergency Service. Their dedication, professionalism, and caring have been outstanding.

“There are literally hundreds if not thousands of people who we would like to thank but this is impossible right now. Please accept this as our most sincere expression of our gratitude.”
