Bill Belichick To Take Head Coach Position At UNC: Report

Bill Belichick, one of the NFL’s most successful coaches of all time, has reached a deal to become the head coach of the football team at the University of North Carolina.

Belichick, who shepherded the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl wins, finalized his contract details with UNC on Wednesday, according to The Associated Press.

Belichick and UNC agreed to a three year, $30 million deal, according to The Athletic.

In January, Belichick parted ways with the Patriots after taking the team to nine NFL finals over the course of a 24-season dynasty.

After reports that Belichick was considering a role at UNC emerged last week, the NFL great confirmed he was in talks with the university during an appearance on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday.

Though he declined to offer specific details, Belichick said he and UNC chancellor, Lee H. Roberts, “had a couple of good conversations” about his potential place in Chapel Hill.

“So we’ll see how it goes,” he added.

Though his new role will be his first time working on the NCAA level, he has personal ties to UNC’s football program.

His father and football mentor, Steve Belichick, had a short stint as assistant coach at UNC prior to his 34-year run as assistant coach at the United States Naval Academy.

If Bill Belichick’s time with the NFL is officially coming to a close, he will end his NFL coaching career with 333 wins, postseason games included.

That history would put him just 14 victories behind the all-time record holder, renowned Miami Dolphins coach, the late Don Shula.
