Earlier tonight, as my colleague José Criales-Unzueta and I approached the Bushwick venue for Luar’s fall 2024 show, we were stopped by security to make room for an attendee in a black SUV. A woman wearing a cowboy hat and a silver sequined jacket emerged from the car. We looked at each other, gobsmacked. Could it be? Beyoncé? In Bushwick?!
The (usually) too-cool fashion milieu began to buzz as rumors of Bey’s presence swept through the venue. It was plausible: her nephew—Solange’s son Julez—was set to walk in the show. Sure, people argued, Solange could very well attend to support her son. But the notion of the ultra-private Beyoncé coming out to Bushwick at 9 p.m. on a Tuesday, seemed utterly laughable.

As predicted, Solange made her way through the crowd, wearing a black midi dress with cutouts at the abdomen over black tights, black pointy-toed slingbacks, and impenetrable black shades. The lowkey singer took her seat away from the reserved spots, sitting in the middle of the bench with designer Christopher John Rogers.
And eventually, as the frenetic energy in the room reached its crescendo, Beyoncé herself appeared in a glimmering silver blazer with matching thigh-high boots from Gaurav Gupta’s recent spring 2024 couture collection. Queen Bey’s look was polished off with oversized sunglasses, a holographic Luar bag, and—of course—her cowboy hat. She was surrounded by a barricade of dutiful publicists and security—including her longtime security guard Julius, who has garnered something of a fandom for himself, as evidenced by the people shouting “Julius! Julius!” from the crowd. Along with Bey came her mother, Ms. Tina Knowles herself.
As Julez walked the runway, the Knowleses grinned from ear to ear, Ms. Tina filming like the dotting grandmother she is. They were just like any proud relatives—only with a lot more security.
