Best natural moisturisers for dry skin: Cult MooGoo range tested by Best Picks team

Winter weather can wreak havoc even on those with the calmest of skin types.

I tend to find my usually oily skin can feel a little red and raw after wrapping up and venturing out for an early-morning walk.

After speaking to the skin specialists at Solstice Skin in Bondi, NSW, I decided to give their body wash and all-over cream recommendation a go: MooGoo.

The brand was founded by Australian farmer Craig Jones in the early 2000s after he noticed his mother – who suffered from the inflammatory condition psoriasis – was using a white paste intended for stopping cows’ udders from drying out on herself.

It helped to combat her flaky and irritated skin, but the cream – being made for cows – was thick and not easily rubbed in.

MooGoo has since grown to over 40 products including shampoo, conditioner, bars of soap, deodorant and sunscreen.

I started off with the signature MooGoo “natural and cruelty-free” products – the Natural Milk Wash and Natural Skin Milk Udder Cream.

I was impressed at how the skincare ingredients were listed – and broken down to make sense – on the back of every pack, with ingredient names I could actually understand and pronounce.

It only took a week before I was telling friends and family about my new discovery, and enthusing about how you can purchase the products from Amazon and have them shipped to your house with ease.

There are a number of different moisturisers in the MooGoo range but I particularly liked the udder cream because it noticeably left my skin softer and less irritated.

I started to test out the other products, namely the Clear Zinc Sunscreen SPF40, the Natural How Now Brown Cow – a gradual tanning moisturiser – and the Fresh Cream Deodorant.

The deodorant, which I’ve got in the Lemon Myrtle scent, is a breath of fresh air and doesn’t feel like it’s “clogging” my pores like some other brands have felt like in the past.

It’s gentle, light and non-irritating but most importantly, does its job.

While I haven’t been able to test the Clear Zinc Sunscreen in full summer sun as yet, it is said to work wonders when the UV range grows higher than three – which it does most days in Australia, even in winter.

Finally, the Natural Tanning Moisturiser has provided ample colour to my extremely pale, winter skin without getting colour onto my bedsheets or smelling too “tan-like”.

Some happy customers on Amazon have been called it “the best fake tan they’ve ever used”.

It’s safe to say I’m a MooGoo convert for good and even when winter comes to a close, I’ll be taking these products into spring, summer and beyond.
