Bec was on holiday in Bali. Then her friends found her seriously injured

“Helpless” — that’s how Bec Ode’s family felt when they answered a call at 6am on Tuesday to learn she had been found with serious injuries in Bali.

The 36-year-old, who has been holidaying in Bali since January, was discovered by friends and rushed to Ngoerah General Hospital where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

“No one knows how it happened,” Ode’s brother-in-law Jesse Wilton told 7NEWS.com.au.

“She was just found.”

Her mother and sister immediately caught a flight to be by her side and the family is currently focussed on getting Ode home to Newcastle, with a medevac flight waiting in the wings for as soon as she is medically cleared.

“It’s very scary getting the call when we’re in another country,” Wilton said.

Ode remains in hospital after undergoing brain, eye and reconstructive surgery.

The family is hopeful about her recovery even though she remains in ICU and is unable to speak.

“The biggest concerns are for the brain haemorrhage that she suffered,” Wilton said in a GoFundMe campaign to help with Ode’s medical costs.

She is expected to lose sight in one eye, and her family fear she may lose the other.

“It hasn’t been responsive to light but it could get better,” Wilton said.

The cost of Ode’s medical care and flights home to Australia are quickly mounting, with the family bracing for total costs of $250,000.

Bills went from $30,000 to $60,000 in jut 10 minutes, Wilton said.

The medevac flight will cost approximately $135,000.

But the family will do anything to aid Ode in her recovery.

“We know Bec will continue fighting her best fight with her strong will and determination,” Wilton said.

“Her family are going to bring her home no matter what it takes.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is currently providing consular assistance to an Australian woman hospitalised in Bali, a spokesperson confirmed.
