Banana Boogie Bakery in South Australia wins Australia’s best sausage roll

A popular bakery in South Australia has been crowned the winner of Australia’s best sausage roll.

Banana Boogie Bakery in Belair took out the inaugural title at the Baking Association of Australia’s (BAA) South Australian Baking Show on Saturday.

Bakery owner Jason Spencer, who has been a baker for 25 years, told 7NEWS.com.au he was pretty confident about the quality of his sausage rolls going into the competition.

“We just had to have a good day of baking on the day, and we did. Our pastry came out perfect, our meat didn’t shrink at all,” he said.

“Everything just went our way on the day, and it showed when the judges called the results out.”

He said Banana Boogie Bakery also pays particular attention to making their sausage rolls “visually appealing”.

“I think a lot of Australian bakers don’t bake things out as well as they could, they’re really white. We like to bake our stuff out, so it’s golden brown and (you get that) flaky pastry all over you when you eat the sausage rolls.”

BAA board member and head judge Stewart Latter told 7NEWS.com.au between 40 and 50 bakeries entered the sausage roll competition, with all of them submitting a roll which had to be no longer than 200mm.

He said the rolls were judged on a series of set criteria, including its overall appearance.

“(The roll has to have) a nice golden colour, a nice shine,” he said.

“Then we cut into it, and you want the ratio of meat and filling to be a good amount with a nice thin layer of pastry.

“You’ve gotta make sure there’s not a gap between the pastry and filling.”

He said the rolls are tasted on their own, and “definitely not” with the addition of tomato sauce.

Each sausage roll was given a score out of 60, with Banana Boogie achieving the highest.

It’s not the bakery’s only national win of 2023, with Banana Boogie taking out five other titles this year, including Australia’s best hot cross bun at the BAA’s Victorian Baking Show in March.

Spencer is now setting his sights on The Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph in Merbein, Victoria, in two weeks time.

“I’m hoping to take an absolutely clean sweep of the national competition this year,” he said.
