Mewis, an American football star herself, last played for her club West Ham on September 21.

She had only just returned to play following a serious leg injury which sidelined her for six months.

Kerr, meantime, has spent the entire 2024 year on the sidelines with an ACL injury she suffered during training for her club Chelsea in January.

The injury ruled out Australia’s all-time leading international goal scorer for the Paris Olympics, where the Matildas failed to make it out of the group stages.

The post was immediately flooded with messages of support from Kerr’s Matildas teammates and was liked by tens of thousands of people within minutes.

Mary Fowler, Teagan Micah, Kyah Simon and Lydia Williams were among the first to comment.

Kerr and Mewis announced their engagement in September last year.

The Australian is still some way off from being fit to return to her WSL club.

An extended Matildas squad was named for four home friendly matches later this month without Kerr in it.

“It’s coming along well,” Matildas coach Tom Sermanni said of Kerr’s rehab.

“Things are getting a little bit better in rehab, but in reality, it’s still probably a 12-month injury, and Sam’s taking that time to come back to ensure that hopefully when she comes back, she’s going to be completely fit and healthy.”

No timeline has been set for Kerr’s return, with the 31-year-old recently expressing her conservative approach to her rehabilitation.

“I mean, it’s my second ACL, so I know you need to take the time, you need to make sure it’s right and I’m doing everything I can,” Kerr told Optus Sport in September.

“But there’s definitely no rush for me, I want to make sure I can play for many more years to come.”

Mewis and Kerr met in 2020 before becoming a couple a year later.
