Silver is the traditional gift for a 25th Anniversary, and today’s Nice Price or No Dice 25th Anniversary S4 is rightfully painted Avus Silver. One of 250 special edition cars, this one also has a supercharger and upgraded wheels and brakes. Let’s see if it will break the bank.
I think that if the 1986 Volvo 240 Estate that fell under our collective gaze yesterday were to have a theme song, it would probably be Dan Hicks’ 1969 country lament How Can I Miss You If You Won’t Go Away? Volvos of this ilk do, after all, have a reputation for tenacity and durability. What our Volvo seemingly lacked, however, was overall value. At a $10,500 asking price, it proved to be just too dear for our collective tastes, an undeniable fact considering its 77 percent No Dice loss.
Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or maintaining a notable personal achievement, we all tend to like marking milestones by full orbits of the sun. Today’s 2006 Audi S4 Quattro is a special edition denoting 25 such orbits since the debut of Audi’s iconic Quattro all-wheel-drive system which became a dominant factor for Audi in both rally racing and brand building.
This 25Quattro has almost all the original bits that denote the 25th Anniversary package—factory DTM body kit, special Nappa two-tone leather upholstery, special Avus Silver Metallic paint, and some carbon fiber trim thrown in for good measure. In addition to all those factory goodies, this S4 has had a slew of aftermarket kibbles added to its bits.
The most notable of those is the PES supercharger with water-to-air intercooling bolted in the valley of the 4.2-liter DOHC V8. Without the Eaton M90 puffing its adder, the all-alloy engine makes 340 horsepower and 302 lb-ft of torque. We’ll have to expect that being blown, it now should make more. Unfortunately, there’s no info in the ad as to how much this one makes, nor what other tomfoolery—larger injectors, ecu tune, etc.—has been done to help the blower do its thing. Also, the PES package doesn’t have the best rep in the biz, so take that with a grain of NaCl.
Other updates include a set of factory-looking Ronal alloys, StopTech front brakes, and a built-in K40 radar detector to keep the Po-Po at bay. Aesthetic updates are comprised of a gloss black grille that sadly has lost its Quattro badge, Audi Ring door decals, and, oddly enough, the painting in body color of all four side-marker lights. Dufuq?
Other than those updates, it all looks pretty factory and to be in terrific condition. The specially upholstered Recaro seats appear to have little to no wear. The steering wheel and special “One of 250” shift knob for the six-speed transaxle look in similar shape.
Of course, there are plenty of toys in the cabin, including heated seats, automatic this and that, and a double DIN stereo with Bose sound and built-in Nav. The car reportedly has a mere 51,374 miles on the clock and comes with a clean title. It’s being offered by a dealer that goes by Dreamrides which is located in Hunt Valley, Maryland.
The asking price for this supposed dream ride is $25,900.
Now, for context, that’s about a third of what this car—without the blower and other non-factory bits—went for when new. This is also, as the shift knob reminds us, one of just 250 cars Audi built to acknowledge the Quattro’s 25th Anniversary. It also should be considered that, while the aftermarket additions do make the car more unique, they detract from its original limited edition uniqueness.
With all that in mind, what do you think about this S4 25Quattro and that $25,900 asking price? And yes, the dealer should have just offered it at a flat $25K to stay with the theme, but then, not everyone can be as clever as you and me. Regardless, is that deal for an even hotter version of an already hot Audi? Or is this one anniversary you’d plan on skipping?
