all eyes on rafah: Palestinian Islamic Jihad group releases video of Russian-Israeli hostage Sasha Trufanov alive in Gaza around 200 days after abduction

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad group has released a 30-second video featuring hostage Alexander (Sasha) Trufanov in the Gaza Strip. The undated 30-second video showed Trufanov identifying himself and indicating that he would soon discuss his and other hostages’ experiences.

Sasha Trufanov was Abducted in October 2023

On October 7, a large-scale attack by Hamas-led terrorists resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people in Israel and the abduction of 252 hostages. Roughly half of these hostages are still being held in Gaza. Trufanov was among those captured, along with his family members, from Kibbutz Nir Oz.
Alexander Trufanov was abducted alongside his mother, girlfriend, and grandmother. While his family members were released in November, his father was killed during the attack. The family, originally from Russia, has no other relatives in Israel.

Trufanov’s family expressed mixed emotions upon seeing him in the video. His mother, Yelena, stated, “To see him today on television is very joyous, but also heartbreaking because he is still in captivity.” She urged decision-makers to take action to secure the release of all hostages. His girlfriend, Sapir Cohen, also voiced her hopes for his swift return: “We are waiting for you to come home already, and we’re doing everything we can for it to happen soon.”

Last week, the Israeli war Cabinet agreed to resume indirect negotiations with Hamas for the hostages’ release. New guidelines were provided to the negotiating team to achieve a breakthrough. This decision followed the release of distressing footage showing the abduction of female soldiers, aiming to prompt urgent action from the government.

Hostage Videos

Islamic Jihad and Hamas have previously released similar hostage videos, which Israel condemns as psychological warfare. Recently, Hamas aired a video of British-Israeli Nadav Popplewell, indicating continued efforts to influence public perception and negotiations.

Current Hostage Status

The IDF has confirmed the deaths of 37 hostages, with 19 bodies recovered, including three accidentally killed by the military. The fate of one additional person remains unknown since October 7. Furthermore, Hamas continues to hold two Israeli civilians and the bodies of two fallen IDF soldiers since 2014.

Israel’s Rafah Strike

Israel resumed bombing the Rafah area in southern Gaza on Tuesday, despite international outrage over a previous strike that ignited a crowded tent city, killing 45 people, according to Palestinian officials.

The attack, which Gaza medics reported also caused hundreds of civilians to suffer shrapnel and burn injuries, prompted condemnation from global leaders and was scheduled for discussion at an emergency UN Security Council meeting.

After the attack, a global movement in the form of All Eyes on Rafah was initiated by social media activists and celebrities.
