Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a tornado warning for a region of eastern Saskatchewan along the Manitoba border.
In an update at 4:09 p.m. on Sunday, the warning area had moved to the Rural Municipality of Rocanville. Several minutes later it was expanded to include the RM of Spy Hill.
Hazards of the storm include 100km/h wind gusts and toonie sized hail. The storm was last reported five kilometres southwest of Spy Hill, moving east at 30km/h.
In a previous update issued at 3:18 p.m., the weather service’s warning covered the area from Langenburg in the north, down to Spy Hill in the south. The warning area contained the communities of Yarbo, Tantallon and Marchwell.
Meteorologists are continuing to track a severe thunderstorm system in the area that has the capacity to produce a tornado. Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall is also possible, according to ECCC.
At that time, the thunderstorm was located near Gerald, Sask. and was reported to be moving east at a speed of 30km/h.
ECCC listed 90km/h wind gusts and toonie size hail as hazards of the storm. Toonie size hail had previously been reported in Gerald.
A large swath of eastern Saskatchewan, extending from Endeavour down to Kenosee Lake continues to be under a tornado watch Sunday afternoon.
