Bangladesh Cricketer Liton Das’ home set on fire?
Amid violent protests and reports of arson across Bangladesh, tweets about the alleged burning of Hindu houses and temples started floating around on social media. Among those tweets, several social media users also claimed that Bangladesh cricket team player Liton Das’s home was burnt by protesters. However, the information was found to be false. After Hasina fled, social media posts falsely claimed that cricketer Liton Das’s house was set on fire by protesters. Das, a Bengali Hindu, has represented Bangladesh in international cricket for years.
Contrary to the viral claims, the house set on fire reportedly belonged to former cricket captain Mashrafe Mortaza, who is an MP with Hasina’s Awami League. Protestors also targeted homes of other Awami League leaders.
Liton Das Home Burnt Update: Clarifications and Reactions
Anurag Raj, a social media user, clarified, “Stop spreading false news! It is the house of MP of Narail-2, Mashrafe Mortaza. He was also an ex-Bangladeshi cricketer.”
Several other users, including Shishir and Nazmus Sajid Chowdhury, shared images and videos confirming Mortaza’s house being burnt down.
Misleading Video of Shakib-Al-Hasan
An old video of former captain Shakib-Al-Hasan supporting students in 2018 also went viral, misleadingly suggesting his support for the current protests. However, later it was found that the video does not relate to the ongoing unrest.
