We love our cheese in the UK. According to Grocery Trader, it can be found in almost all British fridges – 94 per cent of them to be more precise.
While it may be tasty, many health bodies advise consuming cheese in moderation due to its high saturated fat and calorie content.
However, one expert has recommended eating more of a specific type of cheese as a way to aid weight loss and workout efforts.
According to Edward Mather, head nutritionist at Fuel Hub, cottage cheese has multiple health and nutrition benefits.
“Cottage cheese is having its moment in the limelight — and it’s about time,” he said.
“It’s a convenient, ready-to-eat option perfect for busy lifestyles and quick meals. Beyond its practicality, cottage cheese’s mild flavour and creamy texture make it a versatile ingredient easy to add as part of a balanced meal or as an on-the-go snack.
“Packed with protein, low in calories, and rich in essential micronutrients, it’s also a nutrient-dense choice that supports overall health and well-being. It definitely deserves the hype.”
A 100 gram portion of low fat cottage cheese contains 84 calories.
This is far fewer than a standard cheddar, which contains around 400 calories per 100g.
Cottage cheese is still rich in protein, with 11g per 100g, as well as calcium, potassium and selenium, which are all needed by the body.
Edward shared four ways cottage cheese can aid weight loss and help with other fitness goals.
It supports lean muscle growth and can help with weight loss
He said: “Cottage cheese’s high protein content paired with low calories helps athletes to reach their optimal protein intake without exceeding their calorie maintenance. This supports lean muscle growth and helps with weight management.”
It can help your muscles recover from a workout
“The protein in cottage cheese is great for muscle growth, repair, and overall recovery — this is crucial for peak athletic performance,” he continued.
It improves muscle function and bone health
Edward said: “Cottage cheese’s calcium content helps athletes have strong bones and efficient muscle function, enhancing their athletic ability.”
It helps maintain consistent energy levels
He added: “Being protein-rich, it keeps you fuller for longer — this can help athletes avoid overeating and maintain consistent energy levels throughout the day.”
His advice is backed by the Cleveland Clinic, in the US, which says: “Three factors make cottage cheese a great choice if you’re looking to lose pounds or maintain your weight.”
These factors include the fact it is high in protein, low in fat and provides calcium.
