This 1964 Chevrolet Corvette was built for the SCCA B-Production class, and it was driven by Bill Jobe to back-to-back Southwest Divisional championships in 1971 and 1972. In those years it won a total of 15 class victories and four overall wins, which is pretty impressive for a division-level B-prod car. Prior to its road racing career it also won five consecutive autocross championships from 1964-69. This car is not unfamiliar with taking trophies. It was restored about 15 years ago, and allegedly features a Traco Engineering-built fuelie 331 cubic inch V8. The seller wants $69,000. Nice.
Jobe, the original owner, was an engineer at Data General Corporation. The company’s first computer, in the 1960s when computers were rare and took up entire rooms, was called Nova. An upgrade to that computer was dubbed Super Nova. Jobe liked the name so much he called his racing team Supernova. I like that, it’s a cool little piece of the car’s history that comes with it.
According to a provided results biography; the Supernova Corvette was first in class 15 times, second in class seven times, third in class two times, fifth in class one time, and first overall four times. The Jobe/Supernova combination tallied the honor of SCCA Southwest Division Champion in 1971, the same year he was also the Southwest Regional Champion. In 1970, Mr. Jobe was the Outstanding Student at his first driver’s school. A great car was obviously under the control of a talented driver.
Through the 1980s and 1990s the car wasn’t raced at all until it passed to a new owner in 2006. From there the car was restored for competition use once more, running at Road Atlanta, and touring with vintage racing groups SVRA and VRG. Three full binders of documentation come with the car, which is probably overkill, but who knows?
This car was recently brought to auction at the Mecum Harrisburg sale on July 26, but didn’t meet reserve. If you want this thing, you can head over to eBay and click the Buy It Now button and transfer 69,000 nice American dollars to the seller in exchange for this monster of a car. Maybe you can win some more championships with it. Do you have what it takes?
