We’ve all made regrettable hair decisions, and if you lived through Y2K and a few of its surrounding years (let’s say 1995 to 2005) you know that period was especially rife with opportunities to wear hairstyles that make you say “What was I thinking?” when you look at photos years later. Take one of my doozies: I decided to cut my waist-long hair into what the internet might call a “fuck ass bob” right before my senior prom, even though I had earmarked magazine page after magazine page of prom hairstyles that look much more like what Bella Hadid just wore at the Cannes Film Festival.
On Thursday, May 23, the supermodel walked the red carpet for a Cannes screening of the film L’Amour Ouf, posing for the cameras and beaming for the onlookers. She looked stunning in a sheer, sequinned, black halter gown that obviously blows any prom or sorority formal dress out of the water, but her hairstyle is undeniably an elevated version of updos the girlies were getting a couple of decades ago.
It starts with an outrageously sleek base that’s pulled back into a high ponytail. “Where are the Y2K tendrils?” you ask? While they may not be framing her face, the ponytail is basically a tendril festival. The voluminous look is packed with well-defined, bouncy curls, some pinned and some left loose.
