Nintendo has announced plans to end X (formerly Twitter) support for the Switch. Nintendo Switch users are currently able to post screenshots and videos to X directly from the console. Likewise, fans can also use the Nintendo Switch to send friend requests using the console’s social media functionality. Unfortunately, however, this will all change on June 10, when X integration will be removed from the Nintendo Switch. It’s a move that will affect millions of Nintendo Switch users, who only have a month left to take advantage of the console’s social media features.
The news was announced in a post on X: “As of June 10, 2024, it will no longer be possible to post screenshots and videos to X (formerly Twitter) from the Nintendo Switch’s Album, or send friend requests to social media users via the Friend Suggestions feature.”
In a follow-up post on the Nintendo website, the company explained how it would affect specific games.
Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3 players will no longer be able to post to X from the mailbox in Splatsville, Inkopolis Plaza, or Inkopolis Square. Instead, the data will be sent directly to the Nintendo servers.
“The ability to post Super Smash Bros. Ultimate screenshots from the Album in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu to Smash World, in the Nintendo Switch Online smart device app, will also become unavailable,” Nintendo confirms.
Responding to the announcement, a spokesperson for X said that the company remains “dedicated to enhancing and supporting gaming-related features”.
“As part of Nintendo’s planned discontinuation of sharing content to X from the Nintendo Switch, from June 11th, users will need to download Switch gameplay media directly to their smartphones and share it natively on our platform,” the post continues.
“Our partnership with Nintendo remains strong, and we are working together to ensure a smooth transition for all users.
“We will continue collaborating with partners to bring new and exciting experiences to our global gaming community.”
X support was removed from PlayStation and Xbox consoles in 2023. It’s believed the companies are unwilling to pay the monthly charges needed to retain X integration.
