The football power couple shared a joint Instagram post on Tuesday night that revealed, for the first time, precisely how long they really have had wedding plans.
It was simply captioned: “September 1st, 2023”.
Speculation that the question had been popped first ran rife in September when Mewis was spotted with what looked like — and, as it turns out, was — an engagement ring.
But the Australian-American couple wouldn’t be drawn on the subject until November 9 when Mewis, a star of the US women’s football team herself, confirmed the news to People magazine.
Mewis said Kerr was with her through tough times and was “always listening to me nag and complain … all of my crazy antics.”
The pair’s engagement dates back to around two weeks after the Women’s World Cup, where the Matildas achieved Australian football’s best-ever result at a World Cup, falling just short of the final after a 3-1 loss to England in the semis.
It also came just days after Kerr’s 30th birthday.
Tuesday’s sweet reveal sent fans into a frenzy and was flooded by well wishes from famous names in world sport.
Matildas goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold commented: “Here they are. Love you guys x.”
Kerr’s attacking partner on the pitch, Caitlin Foord, added: “Here it is.”
Teammates Steph Catley, Ellie Carpenter, Clare Wheeler, Teagan Micah and Kyah Simon were also among those to add their congratulations.
Kerr and Mewis went public with their relationship during the Tokyo Olympics.
The pair sparked romance rumours after their respective teams played against each other in the women’s football semi-finals.
After the American team won, Mewis sat down to hug Kerr, who was clearly disappointed by the Australian team’s loss.
Days later, they took to Instagram to confirm they were in a relationship.
Kerr shared a shot of the pair kissing, adding a red loveheart emoji.
Since then, they have shared numerous loved-up photos with their fans on social media.
Last year, the pair spoke to GAFFER about how they made their relationship work, despite often being away from each other.
“It is difficult of course just being away from each other but we have FaceTime,” Mewis said.
Kerr added: “I think the thing that keeps us going is that we can see an end point (of their careers keeping them apart).
“We both just want each other to do so well in our careers.
“I don’t think you could be in a long distance relationship with someone who didn’t get the sport.
“She fully gets it and I get it.
“So we just support each other.”
Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, Kerr and Mewis began chatting online during the COVID lockdowns of 2020, before spending two weeks in quarantine together.
They’ve since become an iconic “power couple” for the LGBTQI+ community.
“We’re not private people,” Kerr told GAFFER.
“I like sharing my story.
“I like sharing who I am outside of football.”
Kerr played in the US on and off from 2013 to 2019 before being lured over to England by Chelsea manager Emma Hayes.
Hayes was recently announced as the American national team’s new coach, sparking some speculation that Kerr – having won just about every trophy with Chelsea already – could seek to reunite with Mewis full-time by moving back to play in the US.
