Meghan Invictus Games speech: Body language expert Louise Mahler gives verdict on Harry and duchess

The first public appearance in months by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex has prompted an Australian body language expert to suggest there was no “endearment” shown between the Duchess and her husband Prince Harry.

Louise Mahler was one of many to watch the on-stage moment as Meghan stood beside her husband at the Invictus Games in Germany while giving a lengthy “off the cuff” speech.

And the expert was quick to point out Harry’s “anxious” response to the “impromptu” moment from his wife.

The duchess arrived on day three of the Invictus Games, a sporting initiative the prince founded to aid the rehabilitation of injured or sick military personnel and veterans.

In her speech, Meghan apologised for being “late to the party”, before delving into the “Invictus family” and declaring her husband as “a man of few words this evening”.

“This was clearly an impromptu speech, as indicated by Meghan standing with her legs crossed and being totally unbalanced physically,” Mahler told 7Life.

“She played with her hair and did lots of gestures we don’t normally see, such as folding her arms.”

Mahler noted that at the beginning of her speech she “grabbed” her husband standing beside her, however then “looked away”.

“It was not a gesture of endearment at all and there were no others (for the remainder of the speech).”

The expert also noted Harry’s body language as he stood beside his wife, explaining that, as the speech continued, he appeared more “anxious”.

She suggested that may have been because his wife spoke for too long.

“As Meghan speaks, Harry shows signs of anxiety by twiddling his thumbs and putting his hand briefly in his pocket,” she said.

“He seems a bit distracted, pulling at the front of his pants and looking to the side.

“He seems rushed or bored… Maybe they are under time pressure.”

Speculating, Mahler said that if there was a time pressure in place, “Meghan didn’t get it. She raved on and on.”

“Once she gets on the stage she goes to the ‘pathos’ and cannot stop!” the body language expert said, in reference to Meghan detailing the “Invictus family”.

“As an impromptu speech, it was maybe three times too long.”

Meghan’s “off the cuff” address began by explaining why she was late to the Invictus Games.

“Hi everybody. It is so special to be here and I’m sorry I’m a little late to the party,” she began as her husband stood beside her.

“Like so many of you, you know this is about family and friends and the community that Invictus has created … and so I had to spend a little bit more time getting the little ones settled at home.

“Three milkshakes and a school drop off and I just landed a couple of hours ago and I am thrilled that the first event I can do for Invictus is here with all of you.”

“My husband is a man of few words this evening, do you want to say anything?” she joked, turning to Harry.

“You don’t need to hear from me again,” he stated, before adding a few more informal remarks.

The Duchess stunned in a Banana Republic buttoned dress, paired with a Bottega Veneta belt and Aquazurra shoes.

On her wrist was a set of colourful beads.

During her speech, Meghan said she had been sent gifts, including the beaded bracelet.

She held up her arm to loud cheers and said the initials of someone who was unable to make the game had been etched on them.

Meghan “did her own hair and makeup” for the occasion, The Sun reported.

The evening included an evening of German food, music and entertainment.
