Coles supermarket has attracted criticism on social media over a “scary” discovery at one popular store.
A new video shows that all the self-serve registers at Coles Local Brisbane are permanently marked as “card only”, prompting an angry response from “cash is king” advocates.
Footage taken by one Coles customer – who uses the handle @Global_Freedom_Movement – shows that out of all eight registers in the self-serve checkout area, none accept cash payments.

7NEWS.com.au understands there are three Coles Locals stores in Queensland that do not accept cash at self-serve registers.
However, at these stores there are other checkout lanes – registers with conveyor belts – that are available to use and do accept cash payments.
Despite this, hundreds have voiced their disapproval about there being no self-serve registers that accept cash at the store.
Many supporters of a “cash only” society called for supporters to band together on the issue.
“Everyone needs to only use cash. If they don’t accept cash, then don’t buy from them,” one said.
Another said: “Cashless is coming because we all don’t stand together.”
A third wrote: “Cashless only society – it’s coming y’all UNLESS we all RISE UP and say NO!”
One more said: “Everyone needs to leave the groceries at the check out and walk off.”
Others responded by saying “You’re kidding me” and “What a joke”, while another claimed these are “scary times”.
However, some agreed that there are other options for customers who wish to pay with cash – apart from the self-serve tellers.
“I can see a service desk where they will 100 per cent take cash,” one said.
“Can always scan your stuff at the self-checkout, suspend purchase and go to desk.”
Another said: “They accept cash at the manned register.”
Other consumers also supported stores being cashless.
“Good. Then the cash people will get out of the way and stop holding up the line,” one responded.
Another added: “Who uses cash any more anyway?”
