‘Sexy classic’: Larry Emdur’s throwback photo sparks cheeky response

The Morning Show co-host Larry Emdur was in a nostalgic mood after actor Stephen Peacocke appeared on the show on Tuesday.

Peacocke, a former star of Home and Away, was on the show to talk about filming the new season of Seven series RFDS.

But his appearance on TMS had Larry thinking about another one of the actor’s roles – as sports editor Rob Rickards on The Newsreader.

Taking to Instagram, Larry wrote: “Stephen Peacocke is on @morningshowon7 … and I might have to ask him who inspired his ‘sexy classic’ 80’s look for his role in The Newsreader.”

Larry then shared a side-by-side of Stephen as Rob Rickards – and himself as a news reporter in the 1980s.

In the throwback photo, Larry is wearing what looks to be a double-breasted suit, a patterned tie and pocket square, and he has perfectly coiffed hair.

Stephen Peacocke is sporting an uncannily similar look as Rob Rickards, prompting the question: was his style modelled on 80s-era Larry?

Larry’s throwback pic opened him up to some serious ribbing from colleagues, fans and celebrity friends.

“Bro, where’s my hairspray?” joked his TMS co-host Kylie Gillies.

That prompted one fan to comment: “Kylie Gillies, you killed me at ‘Bro’!”

“I am hearing, ‘discover yourself at Stefan’ when I look into your eyes, Larry,” added TV personality Osher Gunsberg, referring to an 80s ad for hairdressing salon Stefan.

“Steve nailed it, definitely channeling his inner Larry,” added one fan.

“If only you could patent a hairdo,” noted another.

“Nice blow wave!” one follower observed.

“It’s great Seven’s prop department kept the wig,” joked another.

“So it’s not a documentary?” wondered another, referring to The Newsreader.

Others noted the slightly oversized look of Larry’s suit – a common trend back in the day, when jackets often sported padded shoulders.

“Suit looks a teeny bit big across the shoulders Larry, you’ve grown into it I’m sure,” joked one follower.

Perhaps thankfully, Stephen Peacocke doesn’t have to sport a blow-wave for RFDS.

The actor said filming the show gave him a chance to return to the laidback lifestyle he loves most.

Originally from Dubbo, Peacocke, who has a child with wife Bridgette Sneddon, said it was a nice chance to get away from the fast-paced city life for a while.

“When I grew up in Dubbo, it was about 20,000 people, which is probably not far from what Broken Hill is now but Broken Hill is just so isolated from the East Coast,” he told 7Life.

“So you feel like you’re more in the proper bush out there, it’s great.

“If I could live in the bush and then travel to the city when I had to, I’d do that.

“To be able to do a job, acting is the greatest fun for me to do, to be able to do that in the outback with all these types of people that I have grown up with, is an absolute treat.”
