The fact that Meghan had not accompanied Harry while he undertook charity duties in Japan and Singapore sent the rumour mill into overdrive.
Now, body language expert Louise Mahler has declared the relationship all but over.
“We’re all so fascinated by Meghan and Harry,” Mahler told Sunrise.
“I’ve been saying it for years, and analysing Meghan and Harry for years.
“The interesting thing is, we’re saying the marriage is breaking up, but the marriage never really had a footing to go with.”
Mahler believed Meghan started off with values that were all about “forwarding Meghan” and “covering that with a bit of charity work”.
“At first, she meets this Prince, and how lovely, what a fabulous life, and then it turns out that he’s got some problems,” she theorised.
“And she thinks, ‘Wow, we know how to deal with this in California, we’ll sit on the beach and light some candles and we’ll talk it through.’
“But Harry has some serious issues that aren’t easily resolvable, and he’s angry.
“Their solution is to do a little bit of storytelling, so he writes a book, and then it all comes out, and it’s kind of got ugly.
“This is a tremendous embarrassment to her … and now their image is destroyed.
“My prediction is, this (isn’t) going to last, if it hasn’t broken up already.”
Mahler said she had studied some old photographs of the couple from the beginning until more recent times.
“In almost all of the photos, Harry is leaning in, and Meghan is just upright or slightly leaning away,” she said.
“And I think there’s a lot of basis to what people are saying, and that’s that this has never really been a solid relationship.”
Mahler referred to a video when Harry and Meghan were at the basketball in the US and were caught on “kiss cam”.
She said Meghan used “misdirection and laughter” to thwart Harry kissing her.
“If you don’t want to kiss when someone goes in for the handshake, you can jam the elbow for a split second, look away, and laugh.
“It’s a way of misdirecting the affection, it’s a technique, and I could see that Meghan was using this technique when Harry came in for the kiss.”
Mahler said she felt that their body language indicated that Harry and Meghan now felt “trapped” in the relationship together, although she tempered this observation by noting that Harry was probably “quite happy” with Meghan.
“I think he’s just sort of drifting along, and probably thinks this will all go well,” she said.
“Okay, but what’s the reality?
“I think she now wants to distance herself as far as possible from that, because none of that fits her.
“I think down the track we’ll hear (from Meghan), ‘I never really loved him, I had no idea of the hurt that he’d suffered’ … I think that will be the story.
“Harry will just be lost.”
Mahler concluded that Meghan had “disappeared” while Harry went on a solo tour so she could “rebuild” and plan her next move.
“I think Meghan will definitely take an attempt to control the narrative,” she said.
“She will want interviews and to have her voice heard.
“Is there a follow-up Oprah (interview) maybe, about ‘the mistake I made’?
“Watch this space.”
