Head coach Rod Brind’Amour told reporters on Friday that Andersen will be out for “way longer” than the week-to-week timeline initially expected for his lower-body injury.
The team originally announced his week-to-week prognosis on Oct. 31, after Andersen sustained the injury on Oct. 26 during the Hurricanes’ game against the Seattle Kraken.
Before the injury, the 35-year-old from Herning, Denmark, had been having a stellar start to the season, with a 3-1-0 record, a 1.48 goals-against average and a .941 save percentage.
Andersen missed most of the 2023-24 season due to a blood-clot issue. In 16 games, he posted a 13-2-0 record with a .932 save percentage and a 1.84 goals-against average. He is currently in the final year of his two-year, $6.8-million contract.
With Andersen out, Pyotr Kochetkov and Spencer Martin have been sharing duties in the Hurricanes’ net, but the team will likely need to call up another goaltender. Brind’Amour said Friday that Kochetkov is “doubtful” for Saturday’s game against the Ottawa Senators. He is dealing with an undisclosed injury, though it is not considered serious.
The coach also provided an update on forward Seth Jarvis, who has an upper-body injury, stating that the hope is for him to return to practice next week.
Jarvis, 22, has not played since Nov. 9 against the Colorado Avalanche. In 13 games this season, he has recorded 11 points (four goals and seven assists).
