Coldplay’s touching tribute for John Farnham as he makes rare appearance at Melbourne concert

Coldplay performed a tribute for John Farnham when he made a surprise appearance at the UK band’s Melbourne concert on Sunday night.

The beloved 75-year-old singer has been keeping a low profile over the last few years following jaw surgery.

In August 2022 Farnham underwent 12-hour surgery after being diagnosed with throat cancer, with doctors removing a tumour from his mouth and reconstructing his jaw.

Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion invited Farnham, his wife Jill and their two sons Robert and James to their weekend show.

In video from the concert, Martin can be heard telling the crowd, “Mr John Farnham’s in the building,” prompting huge cheers.

The band then performed a call and response with the audience, singing the chorus of Farnham’s 1986 hit You’re The Voice.

Farnham’s younger son James posted video of the moment on Instagram.

“Coldplay’s little tribute to dad. Was pretty cool,” he wrote.

“Such a sick show! The wristband lights and glasses were so fun!”

Farnham’s other son Rob also shared a photo of the family in attendance.

“We were guests of Coldplay last night at Marvel Arena. They were amazing. Was a pretty special night,” he wrote.

Farnham’s legion of fans jumped on social media to react to the singer’s surprise appearance.

“We were there and hearing that JF was in the house made my absolute year. Sssooo happy to see you all out and about enjoying life together. Please pass on my love,” one fan said.

“Awww amazing, what a prestigious honour and none more deserving than The Farnhams! Glad to see you all have a wonderful night together,” added another.

“Aw your dad looks amazing Rob! Bet you guys had a sensational time,” a third said.

The surprise appearance and tribute to Farnham happened on the same night Coldplay frontman Chris Martin scared the crowd when he fell through a trapdoor on the stage.

After the incident, Martin can be heard telling fans “that’s not planned” before going on to thank a member of production staff for catching him as he fell, adding: “Holy s***, that was nearly a YouTube moment.”

The Yellow singer continued with the show and appeared unharmed by the mishap.

Melbourne has been a special stop for the band, which earlier shared a tribute for Martin’s late friend Shane Warne during their first concert of the run.

“Let’s play this for Shane and his family,” he told fans on Wednesday.

“Our brother, we miss you.”

“Every time we come to Melbourne, it used to be fun to hang out with Shane and all the Warne family,” Martin said.

Struggling with emotion, he added: “I don’t want to talk about it too much or I’ll start to cry.”

Martin dedicated the song Sparks to Warne, with poignant lyrics such as: “I promise you this, I’ll always look out for you.”

The touching tribute deeply resonated with fans, including Warne’s own family.

Warne’s daughter Brooke posted footage from the tribute on Instagram: “Love you, Coldplay. Dad would have loved this.”
