Jordan Klepper interviewed a Black supporter of Donald Trump about slavery, the Holocaust and the moon landing ― before the woman veered into completely unexpected territory. (Watch the video below.)
Klepper, the “Daily Show” correspondent who’s been attending MAGA rallies for years to see how Trump fans think, brought along “Slave Play” playwright Jeremy O. Harris for a segment of his new Comedy Central special.
In a conversation with the woman, Harris alluded to Trump indicating he would cut off funding for schools that emphasize the central role slave labor has played in American history.
“Maybe the history should be taught at home, maybe, because it makes people so divisive,” the woman said.
Klepper and Harris pressed further to gauge her worldview.
“Holocaust, real or fake?” Klepper asked.
“I’m pretty sure it was real,” the Trump supporter replied.
“Landing on the moon ― real or fake?” Harris said.
“It was such a perfect mission. I’m skeptical,” she answered, after a pause.
At this point, in voice-over, Klepper acknowledges that the woman’s answer was “a little out there,” but applauds her “open mind.” Then their conversation turned to sexuality.
“What you do in your bedroom, or who you choose to have sex in front of, or who you choose to have sex with, is your business,” the woman said.
She then added: “Free R. Kelly.”
“I did not have ‘R. Kelly truther’ on the bingo card,” Klepper joked to Harris later.
The R&B singer was convicted on multiple child pornography and sex abuse charges in 2022. He was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison in 2023.
Klepper’s new special, “The Daily Show Presents: Jordan Klepper Fingers the Pulse: Rally Together,” marks his last foray into MAGA land before the election, he told HuffPost last week.
Asked whether we’ll be OK if Trump wins, Klepper gave a complicated answer before concluding: “We are in trouble.”
