TYLER, Texas (KETK) – In recent weeks, an account called Tyler Cash Drop has been receiving a lot of attention on social media for leaving money around Tyler for anyone to find.
KETK spoke to the person behind these money drops to find out what inspires these mysterious money missions. The money is supposedly hidden around Tyler by only one person, the account owner.
The owner did not identify themself in hopes that they wouldn’t get “people everywhere asking for money,” which would limit the already limited amount of money they have to do these drops in the first place.
The owner said they started the drops simply to keep busy and to “get me outside and keep me sane.” They also told KETK that when they moved to the area from Houston they wanted to do good after seeing the community for the first time.
According to the owner of the account, they work in an industry that requires a lot of travel. The money the owner had saved lasted all of two and a half weeks, requiring collaborations or sponsorships with companies to supplement the money drops.
Tyler Cash Drops is now getting funds and business cards from local businesses as a way to do more drops and to promote these businesses that are giving back to the community. For drops that don’t have business cards in them, they’re still using their own money.
Tyler Cash Drops often leaves their money in obscure locations outside in Tyler like on light poles or walls. During certain promotional drops they’ll actually hide the money inside the business like they did at Lalo’s Mexican Dogos on Oct. 2 and Sept. 27.
For anyone who is still doubting the veracity of these drops, KETK spoke with Lalo’s who confirmed that the drops actually happened and the money was found. KETK also spoke with the East Texas Mid Week Farmers Market who hosted a cash drop on Oct. 9 promoting their Harvest Farm Festival on Saturday.
The owner told KETK that if the community wants more drops then they’ll need more sponsors and followers to expand their random acts of kindness.
As far as the future of Tyler Cash Drops is concerned, the owner said they’ll continue the drops “till I run out of funds or get tired of driving around.”
