ABC News’ Jonathan Karl checked Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Sunday for being “very critical” of retired generals who have worked under Donald Trump warning that he is a “fascist.”
After Graham slammed the use of the label and said it “shows you how desperate this campaign has been,” Karl showed several clips of the former president attacking Kamala Harris with the same word.
“We have a fascist person running who’s incompetent,” said the GOP nominee in one clip from August.
“She’s a Marxist, communist, fascist, socialist. She’s not actually a socialist, she’s gone past that,” he said in another clip from September.
Graham squirmed in response to the footage as he avoided acknowledging Trump calling Harris a “fascist.”
“Why don’t you ask me, do I think Kamala Harris is a fascist? No. Do I think she’s a communist? No. I think she’s the most liberal person ever to be nominated by a major party. I think she’s ineffective. I think she’s incompetent,” he said.
Karl went on to note that Trump’s attacks “come just as strong, maybe stronger” from the former president.
“But you’re not, you’re not,” Graham said.
“We’re out of time,” Karl interjected.
“You’re not having Lindsey Graham call her a fascist, she’s just incompetent and incapable and would be a lousy president,” Graham added.
The exchange on “This Week” comes after John Kelly, a retired U.S. Marine Corps general and Trump’s longest-serving chief of staff, said the GOP nominee meets the definition of a fascist and wanted Adolf Hitler’s generals.
Retired Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Trump, also described the former president as a “total fascist” who is “now the most dangerous person to this country” while speaking with Bob Woodward for the journalist’s upcoming book.
