Avner’s Bakery targeted in sickening attack, NSW Police investigating

A popular Jewish bakery in Sydney has been targeted with sickening anti-Semitic graffiti.

Avner’s Bakery, on Bourke St in Surry hills, was vandalised on Sunday afternoon, NSW Police said.

It’s understood the bakery was vandalised with what is known as the Hamas triangle sprayed on its front window.

A note, reading “Be careful”, was also sent to the store.

Owner of the bakery, TV chef Ed Halmagyi, also known as “Fast Ed”, a former presenter on Seven’s Better Homes and Gardens, posted an image of the note on Instagram.

“Being Jewish in Sydney, 2024 edition,” he wrote.

“This note was shoved under the door of our bakery overnight.

“But the fact is, it’s hard to be intimidated by inner-city middle-class Cosplay Radicals who graduated from primary school without their pen licence.”

NSW Police said they were “aware of offensive graffiti sprayed on the walls of the premises”.

“A man also received a written note containing an alleged threat when he arrived at the business the same morning,” they confirmed.

An investigation into the incident has been launched.

Chair of the Anti-Defamation Commission Dr Dvir Abramovich said the “desecration” and “sinister” note was “more than just vandalism”.

“It is a dagger thrust into the heart of every Jew who knows the price of being a target,” he told 7NEWS.com.au.

“This attack is a brutal reminder that anti-Semitism is not a ghost of the past, but a raging fire fuelled by the resurgence of terror and hate.”

The latest incident came after dozens of masked people clad in balck gathered under a white supremacist banner in the regional NSW town of Corowa on Saturday.

Addressing the incident on Monday NSW Premier Chris Minns condemned the gathering amid questions over whether it was illegal to perform the Nazi salute in NSW.

“But I want to make this point … the current legislation was drafted by the previous government and if there is any ambiguity on that I want to get it straightened out,” he said.

“Because I am not going to allow racism, anti-Semitism or any kind of remembrance of this horrific period in history to take root in NSW.

“They are lonely … pathetic people who are trying to gain meeting in their life by adopting this horrifying, racist ideology.

“So, we have to call it out when we see it … it is not acceptable here, and it’s not ever going to be.”

Although Halmagyi’s bakery has only been open for six months, it has become well known for its New York-style deli and homemade bagel offerings.

Fans of the store offered their support following the sickening attack.

“Keep up your amazing work, we got your back,” one person said.

“The only thing to be careful of is the swell of extra orders and support coming your way!” another added.

“You should not have to deal with this s***. Sending strength,” a third said.
