The 'American dream' now costs $4.4M: Report

(NewsNation) — Investopedia reports the “American dream” now costs $4.4 million.

The report estimates a lifetime household cost of common milestones, including getting married, raising children, buying a home, owning new cars, saving for retirement and going on yearly vacations.

Caleb Silver, editor-in-chief of Investopedia, said his team examined “the wants, not the needs” for things they considered “reasonable expectations or aspirations.”

“We are talking about having enough to retire. Buying a new car every few years, paying for a wedding, paying for a funeral, raising a couple of kids and sending them to a public college,” Silver said on “Elizabeth Vargas Reports.”

Investopedia’s estimation, which has been adjusted for inflation, could go up or down depending on your lifestyle.

Presidential candidates will make their case on controlling cost-of-living issues during Tuesday’s debate, but Silver says the control lies in the hands of the American people.

“If you think that a presidential candidate is going to deliver that dream, dream on,” Silver said. “Because this is about you and how much you spend and how much it costs to be you.”
