5 charged for spa robberies in Markham and Toronto

Four Toronto males, including two as young as 16 years old, have been charged following a string of spa robberies in Markham and Toronto with three on release orders and weapons prohibitions at the time of their arrest.

York Regional Police, working with Toronto Police, have also issued a warrant for a fifth suspect, a Toronto man wanted on 12 charges, and are still seeking two more suspects.

Cops said on Nov. 23, at around 3:20 a.m., a spa in the Dufferin St.-Wilson Ave. area of Toronto was robbed at gunpoint by three suspects.

Police say an hour later, at about 4:20 a.m., a second robbery occurred at a spa in the area of Birchmount Rd. and 14th Ave. in Markham when three suspects forced their way into the business while armed with a firearm.

Cops alleged that the suspects stole one of the victim’s vehicles and fled with a quantity of cash. In both incidents, the suspects arrived in a stolen white Acura.

On Nov. 28, investigators located the stolen Acura and three suspects were taken into custody. On Dec. 6 at around 1 a.m., a third armed robbery of a spa occurred in the area of Victoria Park Ave. and Steeles Ave. in Toronto.

On Dec. 8, two additional robberies were reported, one at about 3:20 a.m. in the Carlingview and Renforth Drvs. area, and the other at 3:45 a.m., in the area of Finch Ave. and Keele St.

In both incidents, police said the suspects arrived at the scene in a stolen Toyota Highlander.

On Tuesday, two search warrants were executed at Toronto residences with the assistance of the York Regional Police Emergency Response Unit and one suspect was taken into custody.

Officers also seized a replica firearm and tools allegedly used in the robberies and recovered the two remaining stolen vehicles.

Daiquon Estrada Kelly, 19, faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, possession of break in instruments, breach of probation and possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition order.

One 16-year-old male faces five counts each of robbery with firearm and disguise with intent, two counts each of forcible confinement and break of probation, and one count of possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition order.

A 17-year-old male faces just one count of possession of property obtained by crime.

The youths can’t be named as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Investigators are still seeking to identify two other outstanding suspects and are releasing images of the adult suspects as they believe there are more victims.
