“One of the biggest misconceptions is that makeup with SPF is sufficient for their daily sunscreen,” dermatologist Chris Tomassian previously told Vogue. “Unless you are using a massive amount of makeup, you are not getting the actual value of the sunscreen.” To stay safe, apply your favorite facial sunscreen, then dive into your makeup routine.

Makeup artist Amrita Mehta agrees, sharing that for added protection, she recommends using cosmetics with SPF on top. However, she notes that reapplying SPF every two hours can be challenging, especially when trying not to disrupt your makeup. “My favorite methods of reapplication are setting sprays with SPF, SPF powders, or SPF in stick form, which can glide over the face without disturbing the makeup underneath,” she says.
