The marriage ‘pact’ that kept Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee together

Comments made by Aussie actor Hugh Jackman about his marriage to Deborra-Lee Furness have resurfaced amid news of their shock split.

Jackman shared some relationship insights in a 2019 book called The Father Hood: Inspiration for the New Dad Generation, revealing that he and Furness had made a “pact” that had helped them stay together.

“Before we had kids, Deb and I made a pretty simple but powerful choice to look each other in the eye at every crossroads in life,” he said.

“Those crossroads are sometimes big, sometimes they’re small, sometimes you don’t even realise they’re crossroads until you look back.

“But at those moments, we said we’d ask each other, ‘Is this good or bad for our marriage?’

“Or, now that we’ve got kids, ‘Is this good or bad for our family?’

“And as often as possible, we do the thing that is good for our family.”

Jackman and Furness share two adopted children – Oscar, 23, and Ava, 18.

Now, a US-based broadcaster has claimed the pair simply waited until their children were old enough before getting a divorce.

Speaking to Sunrise on Monday morning, Cooper Lawrence said: I think [Jackman and Furness] were waiting until the kids were old enough that they could have an amicable split and not worry about child custody or how much everybody is going to pay each other.”

She added that child custody battles were what made high-profile divorces “messy”.

“They don’t have to worry about that because the kids are older, so now they can just split their multi-millions and all their properties, which is a lot,” she said.

The couple have properties in New York, Sydney and The Hamptons.

Lawrence said that rumours of a split began swirling on “the Broadway scene” after the couple sold their three-storey New York apartment.

“For a while on the Broadway scene there was a rumour there might be something going on in that marriage and people were like, ‘This is kind of odd,’ but as soon as they sold their three-floor apartment… and downsized and then shipped a bunch of furniture home to Sydney, it was like ‘What’s really going on here?’” she said.

Jackman broke his silence on his marriage split a day after the separation statement was made public.

The Australian actor told photographers while out in New York City on September 16 that “it’s a difficult time,” as seen in footage obtained by TMZ.

“I appreciate your thoughts, thank you,” he added.

The couple announced the separation in a joint statement.

“We have been blessed to share almost three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage,” Jackman and Furness told People on Saturday.

“Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.

“Our family has been and always will be our highest priority. We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness.

“We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives.”

Their statement was signed, “Deb and Hugh Jackman.”
