On Tuesday, seven months after his disappearance, NSW Police announced that human remains, believed to those of the 72-year-old, had been discovered.
Police say the remains and some personal belongings were found by a bushwalker on Saturday in the Belmont Wetlands, near the Kalaroo Road fire trails.
“Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District attended and established a crime scene,” NSW Police said.
“While the remains are yet to be formally identified, they are believed to be that of the missing 72-year-old man.
“The remains will undergo forensic testing to confirm the identification.”
A family member of Davidson’s took to social media to confirm he had been found.
“It is with mixed emotions that I post the news that our John has finally been located,” Sue Davidson wrote.
“He was found in dense scrub close to his last sighting on Fernleigh track some seven months after his disappearance.
“We are relieved to finally have him back and to be able to lay John to rest in a dignified manner.”
Sue had previously written on social media that the 72-year-old had advanced dementia.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
