It comes after a rare weekend trade was lodged with young Hawk Tyler Brockman joining West Coast in exchange for picks No.44 and 63.
“It’s less than market value but the Hawks were left with little option given the threat of the Eagles walking Brockman to the pre-season daft for nothing,” Cleary said.
With that trade done, the Hawks can now turn their attention to landing key target Chol from the Suns.
Hawthorn have reportedly offered the forward a four-year deal, but the Suns knocked back the Hawks’ opening trade offer.
Cleary reports Jacob Koschitzke’s move to Richmond could unlock the extra pick needed to satisfy the Suns.
“The Hawks are prioritising a deal for Mabior Chol,” he said.
“The deal likely to be a three-way trade involving Richmond.
“It would see the Tigers give up a pick to the Hawks for Koschitzke, who on trade it to the Gold Coast Suns for Chol.”
Three-way trades involving multiple players are rare in the AFL trade period, although last year Geelong, Hawthorn and Collingwood completed a deal that saw Tom Mitchell (Hawthorn to Collingwood), Ollie Henry (Collingwood to Geelong) and Cooper Stephens (Geelong to Hawthorn) all find new homes.
The Hawks are also trying to land Massimo D’Ambrosio from Essendon and also bring back Jack Gunston from Brisbane.
Gunston expressed desire to return to his old club after just 12 months with the Lions in one of the big shocks of the trade period so far.
Brisbane inquired about young tall Brandon Ryan in exchange for Gunston, but the Hawks are focused on their other deals first.
Gunston’s request came as a surprise to Hawthorn and is no certainty to get completed before the trade period finishes on Wednesday night.
