Lara Trump has attempted to paint Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris as unqualified for her position, but Trump’s lack of self-awareness turned the attack into a massive self-own.
Trump, the Republican National Committee co-chair and daughter-in-law of GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, claimed on a Wednesday episode of her “Right View” podcast that the former prosecutor and senator “has failed upward her entire career.”
She added that Joe Biden only selected Harris as his vice presidential running mate in 2020 “based on how she looked, based on the fact that this is a woman, based on the fact that she was a minority woman.”
Biden had said at the time that he chose Harris, who has Black and South Asian heritage, due to various factors, including her gender. He also said that he wanted someone who was “ready to be president” and had an important perspective on key issues.
On “The Right View,” Lara Trump said that gender being part of Biden’s equation was “really gross.”
“I’m a woman. Do me a favor: Don’t ever give me a position based on the fact that I’m a woman,” she said. “Either I earned it, or I didn’t! And that’s it. That’s all I need.”
Many people on social media were amused by Trump’s remarks, saying that she ignored an inconvenient detail: that she was seemingly selected as RNC co-chair due to her family connection with Donald Trump, making her a “nepotism” hire.
In fact, when her role as co-chair was first announced in March, the person who introduced her appeared to acknowledge that she was unqualified for the position.
“In a world where qualifications are often measured by titles and years of experience, we are reminded of a powerful truth: God does not call the qualified; he qualifies the called,” RNC member Beth Bloch said at the time. “Lara Trump is the embodiment of this truth.”
Not surprisingly, social media users pointed out the irony of Trump’s insistence that she only wants a job based on merit.
