Glasgow deemed ‘best place’ for Hollywood blockbuster starring Glen Powell

Glasgow has been deemed the “best place” to shoot a Hollywood blockbuster starring Glen Powell, according to the location manager.

Camera crews and rusty cars have taken to the streets as a reimagining of 1987 cult classic The Running Man, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, is being shot in the city.

The movie, based on a Stephen King novel, is set in dystopian America and follows falsely convicted policeman Ben Richards, who is forced to participate in a deadly TV show.

A number of sites around Glasgow have been used to emulate the streets of New York.

Large film crews have been spotted on Renfrew Street, St Vincent Street and outside of Glasgow’s Armadillo.

Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell is the lead actor in the Edgar Wright-directed flick, with Josh Brolin and Katy O’Brian also set for major roles.

Supervising location manager, Eugene Strange, said: “We looked at many cities across the UK to double for American cities, but Glasgow is by far and away the best place to double.

“It has a variety of architecture, modern, classical and brutalist. We’ve used all three of those styles making Glasgow appear as New York, Boston and maybe Detroit.”

The action-thriller is set to hit silver screens around the world in November 2025.
