Champion jockey James McDonald continues domination with Thousand Guineas win on Joliestar

Champion jockey James McDonald and trainer Chris Waller have teamed up for another Group 1 win with Joliestar taking out the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield on Saturday.

It was also back-to-back victories for the pair in the 1600-metre event after winning last year Madame Pommery.

Joliestar ($4.60) was only in her fifth start, but was too good for the field with Kimochi ($9.50) a length-and-a-half away in second and favourite Skybird ($4.20) a further length back in third.

The victory caps a stunning spring for McDonald, who won the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) aboard Riff Rocket and the VRC Oaks on Zardozi.

He also won the Cox Plate on Romantic Warrior and the VRC Champions Stakes with Atishu.

“She’s had a feeling about her that her whole preparation that she has kept improving and improving but she hasn’t been winning,” McDonald said.

“She hasn’t had a lot of luck, so I thought today from barrier one she was going to get every chance.”

Trainer Waller said they had always targeted this race for Joliestar, which meant bypassing the prestigious Sydney races.

“For a three-year-old filly it’s a pretty long-range plan. She’s still only starting her career, but we did identify that she had ability right from the start,” Waller said.

“She’s done it herself. I’ve found the races, she’s turned up.”

Saturday also marked legendary jockey Damien Oliver’s final feature race meet in Melbourne.

But there was no final win for the retiring 51-year-old.
