An eagle-eyed Bunnings customer has spotted a new detail in a “Conditions of Entry” sign at their local store.
Sharing on Reddit, shopper shared two points of interest in signage at Bunnings’ new Preston store in Melbourne.
The sign reads: “CCTV is in use. Facial recognition technology may be used.”

It also stated that: “Number plate recognition technology may be used and images shared with Police for crime prevention and safety purposes.”
Last June, Bunnings agreed to “suspend” use of facial recognition software after widespread backlash following a investigation by consumer watchdog Choice.
7NEWS.com.au understands that Bunnings has not resumed use of facial recognition in any store – despite what the new sign states.
It’s believed the retail giant has kept the reference to the controversial software on its updated signage while the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) investigates its use in Bunnings stores.
However while the reference to facial recognition technology has been included on old and new signage in stores, the mention of “number plate recognition technology” in a new addition.
Photos of store signage in circulation last July made no mention of number plate recognition software, however the new notice states that it is in use.
7NEWS.com.au understands that Bunnings has used this technology for a number of years to help protect team and customers from abusive and threatening behaviour in its stores and to combat organised retail crime.
License plate recognition is used by many automated car parks and by retailers across Australia. Bunnings has it in place as part of its CCTV at the entrance to its trade yards and some of its carparks.
Bunnings Director of Store Operations Ben Camire said the new signage can be found in all stores.
“A few months ago we refreshed conditions of entry signage so it has a consistent look across our store network,” he told 7NEWS.com.au.
“This signage can be found on existing stores, as well as new stores like Preston in Victoria.
“The signage includes guidelines for customers wishing to bring their pets in store and detail on the use of CCTV.”
Reddit debate
In their Reddit post, the Melbourne shopper who spotted the updated sign stated that Bunnings had “introduced number plate scanning.”
The post attracted divided reactions from Reddit users, with some questioning the use of the technology.
“You’re a thief! Now, buy something from us!” said one.
Added another: “Why do they want to inspect my vehicle? I’m picturing a Mexico-USA border with a giant X-ray machine and people with mirrors.”
But others applauded the move.
“What’s the issue? Who cares, it’s to stop people stealing stuff. Good on Bunnings for this,” another responded.
A former Bunnings worker added: “The number plate screening has been around for a while. We would get calls when cars with reported theft came in.”
